Haku's Chronicles: Tuna Sandwich
I was lounging on my favorite spot by the office window, basking in the warm glow of the afternoon sun, when the door creaked open. My whiskers twitched, and my ears perked up at the sound of quiet, hesitant footsteps. I can tell when something is different – even though I can’t see, I can feel it in the air, in the way humans move, and in the soft murmurs that pass between them.
This time, though, there was another sound. A tiny, frightened mew.
I raised my head, sensing something new had entered my domain. The humans gathered near the door, speaking softly. I padded over, my sleek fur brushing against the furniture as I navigated the space effortlessly. My whiskers guided me, and my nose picked up the faint scent of something new: a kitten. But not just any kitten. I could smell the chill of the outside still clinging to its tiny body. It was cold, scared, and unwell.
The humans were murmuring about how this poor thing had been found—shivering in the cold, alone, and sick. My tail swished slowly behind me as I approached. The kitten was small, its fur wet from the damp air outside, trembling as it pressed into the soft towel they had wrapped around it. It must have felt terrified, surrounded by unfamiliar sounds and scents.
I knew that feeling—being afraid, unsure of the world around you. When I first came here I didn't know how to trust, I had to learn to rely on the gentle voices and kind hands of those who cared for me. And now, it was my turn to offer some comfort.
I moved closer, brushing my nose lightly against the kitten’s head. It flinched at first, then seemed to relax a little, recognizing that I wasn’t here to hurt it. I purred softly, letting it know that everything would be okay, that it wasn’t alone anymore. The humans smiled, and I heard them whisper how I always seem to know when someone needs a friend.
As the afternoon passed, the kitten was placed in a warm bed, with soft blankets and a little heating pad to chase away the cold that still clung to its tiny frame. I stayed close, keeping my presence nearby so the kitten could feel safe. It didn’t move much, still too sick and weak, but every now and then, I’d hear a soft, sleepy purr in response to mine.
I know this kitten has a long road ahead—healing takes time, and trust even more. But that’s okay. I’ll be here, keeping watch and offering warmth in whatever way I can. This office is full of love, and I’ve learned that there’s always room for one more heart, no matter how small or scared.
We all need someone to lean on sometimes, and I’m happy to be that someone today. Welcome, little one. You’re safe now.
